When My Sisters Say Sexist Stuff

I am all like:

HOW? You do realize you are a woman, right?

Sexist Pinterest

-All I see is pictures of gorgeous models and then right after I see “How to loose weight” boards or pins.

-A lot of the topics are cooking, fashion, how to starve yourself, and where you should be now, instead of where you are.

-It makes me feel like I am no womanly enough because I can not cook like the pictures or look like the models.

-Don’t even bother trying to be as beautiful as the ladies you see on there…

Pinterest is dangerous and what does it say about our culture? A mouthful.

Really enjoyed the sexism at the Oscars…

Not.

Prometheus: A Movie Where Women Finally Get The Spotlight

SPOILER ALERT! You have been warned!

There are rare times when I go to the movies and leave happily, with an overwhelming sense of empowerment. I usually leave movies upset by the lack of reality represented by the female characters and the blatant sexism.  The media today is flooded with images and messages about women that are far from positive. However, when I went to see Prometheus this weekend, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The movie of course had its flaws and problems, but what impressed me the most was the respect and authority given to all the female characters. These were not ladies who were running around in high heals or rocking extremely long extensions, trying to look sexy (lets be honest no one is running away from aliens without a ponytail holder!). These were real, degree holding, strong women who were in charge of the mission and responsible for the whole crew.

On top of the well done character development by Mr. Scott, there were hidden messages that support women and their many choices they have to face involving their bodies. For example, the main character Dr. Shaw was faced with the decision to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. David, the cyborg, attempts to stop her and tries to avoid the reality that if she carried the fetus to term she would face certain death. Instead Dr. Shaw escapes and performs her own abortion like procedure to rid herself of he unwanted alien baby.

I couldn’t help but think that the movie repressed what we, as women, are facing today. We are continuously being told what to do with our bodies and laws seem to be passing almost daily, restricting our ability to choose what is right for ourselves and our bodies. As I watched the scene play out I was thrilled to not only see Dr. Shaw’s decision making process, but all the obstacles she had to face to obtain the right to choose. It was as real as any abortion I have ever heard of.
